How many pavers do I need?
Work out your area in square metres (length × width), then divide by the area of one paver including its joint gap. A 400 × 400 mm paver with a 3 mm joint covers about 0.162 m², so you need roughly 6.2 pavers per square metre.
Then add extra for cuts and breakages. Around 5% is enough for a simple rectangle in stack bond. Allow 10 to 15% for herringbone, curves, or areas with lots of edges to cut around.
What goes under pavers
- Excavate to allow for road base, bedding sand and the paver thickness.
- Lay and compact road base in layers: 100 mm for paths and patios, 150 mm or more for driveways.
- Screed a 20 to 30 mm layer of bedding sand. Don't compact it before laying.
- Lay pavers, fix an edge restraint, then brush jointing sand into the gaps and plate compact.
These results are estimates to help you plan and order. Site conditions, supplier sizes and product specs vary, so check quantities with your supplier or a qualified landscaper before you buy. Driveways and anything carrying vehicles may need an engineered base.
