How much garden edging do I need?

Measure the full length of every edge. For curved beds, lay a garden hose along the line and measure the hose afterwards. Add about 5% for straight runs and 10% for curves, then divide by the length of each piece.

Steel and aluminium edging bends to follow curves and is held with stakes. Timber suits straight lines. Bricks and pavers are bedded on a concrete haunch so they don't move.

Getting a clean edge

  1. Mark the line with a hose or spray paint and cut a straight-sided trench with a spade.
  2. Set the edging so the top sits just above the lawn, low enough for the mower wheel to run along it.
  3. Drive stakes on the garden side, not the lawn side.
  4. Backfill and firm the soil on both sides so the edge holds its line.

These results are estimates to help you plan and order. Piece lengths, stake counts and brick sizes vary between products, so check with your supplier before you buy.
